Lead Engineer, Protection

About the Job:

We are looking for a proactive and experienced Protection Lead Engineer to join our high-performing team. In this leadership role, you will be responsible for driving the design and development of critical electrical infrastructure projects, with a core focus on substation protection and control systems, relay coordination, and power system studies. You will lead project activities, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and ensure the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions in the transmission and distribution (T&D) sector.

Key Responsibilities/Deliverables:

• Lead the design and engineering of LV/MV/HV/EHV substations from conceptual and detailed design through to IFC (Issued for Construction) stage.
• Develop and review detailed engineering documentation including: control and relay panel layouts, cable schedules and routing diagrams, single-line and wiring diagrams, instrument and interconnection diagrams, and bill of materials (BOM).
• Perform and validate calculations for AC/DC auxiliary systems, CT/VT sizing, battery banks, and cable selection.
• Ensure compliance with applicable international and regional standards such as IEC, IEEE, NEC, SASO, and SEC.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces with civil, structural, and primary equipment engineering teams.
• Review and approve vendor documentation and technical submittals, ensuring alignment with project specifications.
• Provide technical leadership during installation, testing, and commissioning phases of substation projects.
• Mentor and support junior engineers in protection system design and best practices.
• Stay current with emerging technologies, tools, and standards in substation design and relay protection systems.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a focus on Power Systems, High Voltage, or Electrical Machines.
• Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in T&D projects, with a strong background in secondary system design and leadership experience.
• Proven expertise in all aspects of protection and control design for substations across voltage levels.
• Strong command of protection and control system components such as relays, meters, transformers, batteries, and SCADA interfaces.
• Solid knowledge of applicable standards (IEC, IEEE, BS) and familiarity with regional regulations (e.g., Saudi standards).
• Proficiency in electrical design tools such as AutoCAD, CDEGS, and Dialux. Experience with 3D modeling and document management systems is an advantage.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to manage and resolve complex technical challenges independently.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience managing teams and interfacing with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
• Results-oriented mindset and a commitment to delivering excellence in engineering and project execution.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

• Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required.
